My dog is really not that special. Perhaps I should re-phrase. She is special to me, but she is not unique. My dog enjoys the comfort of her soft bed.
My dog doesn't like to go outside in the rain. In fact, if she could figure out how to use the toilet, I'm quite certain that would be her potty spot of choice.
My dog gets incredibly excited at the prospect of joining me on a walk, or hopping in the car for a ride to town. My dog loves to pack around her stuffed animals and chase a ball.
My dog mopes when she is bored. She gets depressed if she doesn't get to head outside with me, or if I'm too busy to play with her.
My dog loves the dog cookies that I bake and she runs to the pantry if I say "do you want a cookie?!" My dog has a sinful sweet-tooth and she will sneak a sugary treat if given the opportunity.
My dog will cry and claw at the slider window if she is left outside for over 3 minutes. She hates to be out there alone. My dog is afraid of loud trucks and she sometimes panics if she can't find me. She knows what fear is.
My dog gets crazy excited for balloons.
My dog enjoys playing with others dogs. She likes to roll in the grass on a warm day. She loves a kind pat on the head, or a scratch behind the ears.
My dog loves to do anything that involves the family.
My dog really isn't that special.
I think this frequently when the weather changes. The days are shorter, colder, wetter. I think of all the dogs that are tethered to the end of a rope or chain, or confined to a kennel run or left for long hours in a backyard - essentially forgotten by their owners.
Those dogs are not different from my dog. They want a soft bed. They want to be inside with their families. They want to be warm. They would love to go for a walk or a car ride.
I think of the dogs sitting in noisy, frightening animal shelter kennel runs. The stranges smells, the loud, agitated barking, the unfamiliar surroundings. Those dogs are no different than my dog. They want to see a famliar face. They want the soft touch of a loving hand.
If given the opportunity, those dogs would all like to be a part of a loving family. They would like to have the opportunity to chase a ball, roll in the grass, or sneak a treat from the pantry.
My dog really isn't that special. She is one of the lucky ones, loved by her own family. If only every dog could know that same love.
